October Gardening in Wilmington, NC

As the weather cools, October provides us with a window for planting the cooler weather crops that will slowly grow all winter long. It’s important to time it right, as you want these plants to be settled in before we get any frosts or snow. The period of time from late September to the middle of November usually provides that sweet spot, making this the best time to put in a fall garden.

Temps often fluctuate a bit during this time, you may have a night in the 40’s and days in the 80’s, so a bit of flexibility and more attention to watering can prove worth the effort, as once the temps cool down your healthy and well-established plants will require much less care.

Often people wonder what to plant this time of year, so here are a few crops that I’m planting during this fall planting window.

Cabbage

Carrots

Lettuce

Onions

Broccoli and Cauliflower

Asian Greens (Bok Choy, Mizuna, Tatsoi)

Cilantro

All these, and many more, can be planted during this fall planting window before the really cold weather hits. If you are interested in starting to garden in the Wilmington, NC area, fall is the best time to get started, because you won’t be dealing with the heat, humidity, and bugs that are so rampant in the hottest months.
