What’s Growing In January

As a transplant from the north, one of the biggest surprises to me when I moved south was the ability to grow all winter. January used to be a month where the only gardening joy I could find was from you tube videos and library books. Often my garden would be covered with feet of snow, and the idea of gardening in January was as impossible as making a snowman in July. But here in the Wilmington, NC area we have these wonderfully mild winters, and it makes it not only possible but easy to grow certain crops all winter long. Just like everything in the garden, if you have a good setup you need to focus on techniques and timing to achieve your goal.

Here are some of the crops that are growing this January here in my 8a Wilmington NC winter garden.

Lettuce/Salad Greens

Kale

Bok Choy/Asian Greens

Radishes and Salad Turnips

Perennial Herbs

Collards

Green Onions

Cilantro

These crops grow easily here in the Wilmington, NC area all winter long. If the temps dip below 30 degrees (which happens on occasion) they will appreciate a bit of protection from the winter cold. But it’s a small sacrifice for the ability to harvest your own fresh, healthy veggies all winter long. If you’re interested in starting to harvest from your garden every week of the year in your own kitchen garden, we offer consults, design and installation packages, along with coaching sessions where an experienced coach will show you exactly how to turn your space into the garden of your dreams.
